MBMC polls: 15 MBMC staffers face FIR, for skipping election duties

Bhayandar: Cracking the whip on errant government personnel, who brazenly skip their assigned duties in poll-bound cities, the administration has registered FIRs in the Bhayandar police station against 15 senior officials attached to the various offices in Mumbai and Thane district.

The concerned officials have been booked for remaining absent from their assigned duties as Returning Officers (RO) and Assistant Returning Officers (ARO) for the elections to the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation (MBMC), which are scheduled for August 20.

The officials were supposed to report on duty on July 25, a day ahead of scheduled filing of nomination papers, which started off on Wednesday. However, they skipped duty without specifying valid reasons, prompting MBMC chief Dr Naresh Gite to register a police complaint in his capacity as the Election Officer at the Bhayandar police station against the officials.

A case under the relevant sections of the Representation of the People’s Act,1951, was registered against the officials on Wednesday for their failure to perform their assigned duties. Unless a valid and justified reason for their absence is given poll duty is mandatory as per directions of the EC.
