With the elections for Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation round the corner, corporators have begun to move to parties that they hope will offer them a ticket to contest the polls.
The latest being Prashant Dalvi, a sitting corporator from Shiv Sena, who joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. According to sources, Mr. Dalvi was in touch with Narendra Mehta, the BJP MLA from Mira Bhayandar. “Mr. Dalvi changed parties due to discord in the Sena,” said a source.
Mr. Dalvi said that in the last couple of years, he had been trying to do constructive development work, in which Mr. Mehta helped him. “In the present municipal corporation, too, I wanted to work for the people, but did not get adequate support from the Shiv Sena,” he said.
Elections to the Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation are slated to be held on August 20. Counting will take place on August 21.
According to sources, in the last year and a half, several people across the political spectrum in Mira Bhayandar have moved to the BJP. “Almost all members of the Nationalist Congress Party have joined the BJP,” they said.
Somen Mukherjee, BJP spokesman from Mira Road, said, “The pro-BJP wave which started in 2014 is still sustained. With [Prime Minister Narendra] Modi jiat the centre and Devendra Fadnavis as the Chief Minister, people are looking forward to the same governance and constructive work in the corporation.”
